Reasoning with imprecise belief structures

چکیده

This paper extends the theory of belief functions by introducing new concepts and techniques, allowing to model the situation in which the beliefs held by a rational agent may only be expressed (or are only known) with some imprecision. Central to our approach is the concept of intervalvalued belief structure, defined as a set of belief structures verifying certain constraints. Starting from this definition, many other concepts of Evidence Theory (including belief and plausibility functions, pignistic probabilities, combination rules and uncertainty measures) are generalized to cope with imprecision in the belief numbers attached to each hypothesis. An application of this new framework to the classification of patterns with partially known feature values is demonstrated.

Preferential Structures for Comparative Probabilistic Reasoning

Qualitative and quantitative approaches to reasoning about uncertainty can lead to different logical systems for formalizing such reasoning, even when the language for expressing uncertainty is the same. In the case of reasoning about relative likelihood, with statements of the form φ % ψ expressing that φ is at least as likely as ψ, a standard qualitative approach using preordered preferential...

Preferences in Cardinal Direction

How do we reason with imprecise spatial descriptions? Do reasoners typically prefer one conclusion (over another) consistent with the imprecise descriptions? Based on empirical findings we are able to give a positive answer for the second question for spatial reasoning with cardinal direction relations. Analyzing further the pattern of the preferred conclusion reflects the idea of informativene...

Robust Bayesianism: Imprecise and Paradoxical Reasoning

We are interested in understanding the relationship between Bayesian inference and evidence theory, in particular imprecise and paradoxical reasoning. The concept of a set of probability distributions is central both in robust Bayesian analysis and in some versions of Dempster-Shafer theory. Most of the literature regards these two theories as incomparable. We interpret imprecise probabilities ...

Fusion of imprecise, uncertain and conflicting beliefs with DSm rules of combination

In this paper one studies, within Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT), the case when the sources of information provide imprecise belief functions/masses, and we generalize the DSm rules of combination (classic or hybrid rules) from scalar fusion to sub-unitary interval fusion and, more general, to any set of sub-unitary interval fusion. This work generalizes previous works available in literature...

Belief function and multivalued mapping robustness in statistical estimation

We consider the case in which the available knowledge does not allow to specify a precise probabilistic model for the prior and/or likelihood in statistical estimation. We assume that this imprecision can be represented by belief functions models. Thus, we exploit the mathematical structure of belief functions and their equivalent representation in terms of closed convex sets of probabilities t...
